Role of the PET Center

The PET scanner is an imaging device allowing observation of complex functions while active within an organism. The PET scanner is attracting a great deal of attention from researchers all over the world as a tool to reveal complex biofunctions centering around the brain. The Hamamatsu PET Center was founded with the main goal of revealing the secrets of these kind of biofunctions.

R and D with High Performance PET Equipment

High performance PET scanners are indispensable in PET research. Hamamatsu Photonics took advantage of long years of experience in optical sensor and optical measurement technology to develop the "Animal PET Scanner SHR-7700" having performance unmatched anywhere in the world. This PET scanner was designed using feedback from researchers in many countries and has a high resolution of 2.6mm (FWHM) and a wide 330mm aperture, a gantry for selecting an optional tilt angle and measurement modes selectable according to the research target. All these features make it an indispensable tool for research efforts using PET.

Providing Joint Research Facilities

Installing PET equipment requires large sums of money and the installation site must be near facilities such as cyclotrons. Hamamatsu Photonics not only develops PET equipment but also makes peripheral equipment and know-how needed for PET measurement and provides the Hamamatsu Photonics PET Center as a joint research location so that the animal PET scanners can be utilized by large numbers of researchers. Since its founding through the present, the Hamamatsu Photonics PET Center has reaped tremendous results in joint research with scientists from the US and Europe as well as domestic Japanese researchers.

Basic Research to Reveal How Biofunctions Work

How the brain functions or how biofunctions work is still largely a mystery. In order to unravel this mystery, basic research results from many areas have to be accumulated and collated. At the Hamamatsu Photonics PET Center, we are amassing and analyzing data on different research themes to acquire the basic data needed to understand brain functions.

Using PET to Develop New Medicines

Results from many basic research efforts have proven that PET equipment is extremely useful as a research tool for developing new medicines. We are currently engaging in joint research of pre-clinical evaluation with many pharmaceutical companies to develop drugs that are potent, safe and have minimal side effects.
