Industry

Opto-technology is weaving itself deeper into our lives and being used to create pleasant and comfortable lifestyle environments. This technology is embracing an ever-widening spectrum of devices, among them cameras and CD players, copiers, fax machines, automatic doors, and all kinds of sensors for automotive use. Additionally, manufacturing devices, testing devices, and measuring devices that use opto-technology are being widely used in the semiconductor industry and various other industrial fields. Hamamatsu Photonics products are also at work in various applications, providing support in highly precise and highly reliable production systems.

Auto focusing for cameras

When an infrared beam is directed at the subject being photographed and the light reflected back from the subject is detected, the distance to the subject can be measured automatically. Infrared LEDs and PSDs (position sensitive detector) are used in applications such as this.

Optical disk pickups

The digital signals embedded in optical disks such as CDs and DVDs are read using light, and are converted to voice and video signals. Si photodiodes, photo ICs and other components are used in this processing. Si photodiodes are also being used in the output monitors of laser diodes.

Opto-technology is also being used to differentiate paper currency and coins, and in product detection and other applications. Light Emitting Diode (LED), photo ICs, photodiodes, and photo transistors are among the products being used in this technology.

Automotive-related

Opto-technology is being applied in automobiles in many ways, a few of which are in car air conditioner sensors that detect the volume of solar radiation, auto headlight sensors, steering sensors, and rain sensors. Photodiodes, photo ICs, infrared LEDs, and other components are used for these purposes.

Non-destructive testing

X-rays can be used for nondestructive testing of semiconductor devices, electronic components and, ceramics, and other materials, and the interiors can be examined for irregularities. Products that are used in these applications include microfocus x-ray sources, x-ray image intensifiers, x-ray flat panel sensors, and x-ray line sensor cameras.

UV hardening bonding

Ultraviolet rays and ultraviolet-hardened resin are used for high precision adhesion of minute electronic components and optical components. Our Spot light sources are used here.

Image measurement

Image measurement technology using video cameras is being used in industrial applications spanning a broad range of industries, and is enabling high-precision forms of measurement such as inspection, matching, and sensing to be carried out. Our CCD cameras, digital CCD cameras, image measurement modules and other products are being used in these applications.

Semiconductor testing devices

Opto-technology is also hard at work in a number of ways in wafer defect inspection and IC internal failure analysis. For instance, many products from the PHEMOS series and THEMOS series by Hamamatsu Photonics are being used in inspections aimed at pinpointing defect locations in ICs by picking up tiny amounts of light or heat.
